Communication Corner: Back to the Basics

When looking at augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device options it’s easy to get excited about the bells and whistles of products. Sometimes the reason the search for a device was started in the first place is forgotten. The ultimate goal is to find a communication system that works well and makes sense to the person who will use it. Online trainings are a way to help you stay focused.

Online trainings can re-fresh what you already know about AAC. Trainings can provide the insight you need to help make informed decisions about what language system might be best for your child or for the children you work with.

What works well for one student doesn’t always work well for another. Knowing your options and keeping an open mind to trying new tools can help you help your students and children find the most effective tool for communication.

Language System Resource - Implementation Toolkit

The Implementation Toolkit by Dynavox is a collection of video and print-based resources created to help facilitate successful interaction using AAC.  SLPs and educators can use the resources for personal growth or to train others. The resources found in the Toolkit cover topics related to AAC, its users and the people who support them. A variety of print materials, as well as instructional videos, feature essential information about AAC, lesson and therapy plans, techniques for communication partners, an introduction to the Dynavox language software, InterAACt, and much more. Users create a user name and password to log in to the site.   Not sure where to start? Check out the “Learning Paths” tab where you can browse through hundreds of resource videos and handouts organized by topic. Selected resources can be saved to “My Favorites” for easier access the next time you visit.  Check out the Implementation Toolkit at
